What's the best way to tie my shoes?

The Ins & Outs of Footwear Security

With the advent of Velcro closures in the mid-1980's, shoelace tying quickly became a dying art.
In an attempt to revive this time-honored tradition, we at George Sawyer humbly offer
the following tips and techniques.

The Rabbit Ears Technique

Most first attempts at proper shoe tying are done using the Rabbit Ears Technique (RET).

After making a half-knot, each lace is looped into an ear-like form.  The wearer determines which "ear" folds over and under the other, completing the tying operation.

The Maypole Technique

A cousin of the RET, the Maypole Technique (MT) begins with one loop or "pole". The wearer then loops the other end of the lace around the "pole" end, tucking part of the loose end under the "pole" and completing the knot.

Double Knots

Shoelace related accidents account for over 40% of US emergency room visits. To avoid a traumatic and costly incident, Double Knot (DK) your laces. After completing either the RET or MT, employ the RET a second time. Rest assured, you'll have a lifetime of injury-free shoe ownership.
